Dr. Guo Huijie
The main symptoms of mumps in children include the following: 1. Fever: Children often develop moderate or high fever, with body temperature reaching above 39°C, accompanied by chills, headache, and general malaise. 2. Swelling of the parotid glands: This is the most distinctive feature of mumps. Parotid gland swelling usually begins on one side and later involves the other side, or may occur on only one side. The swelling starts at the earlobe and spreads outward, with unclear borders. It feels elastic and tender upon touch, and the overlying skin may appear non-erythematous or slightly reddened. The swollen area can extend upward to the zygomatic arch, posteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and downward to the submandibular region and neck. 3. Localized pain: When the parotid glands swell, children may experience local distending pain, which becomes more pronounced when opening the mouth, chewing, or consuming acidic foods. 4. Redness and swelling of the parotid duct: Examination of the oral cavity may reveal redness and swelling at the opening of the parotid duct, although purulent discharge is usually absent. If these symptoms are observed, prompt medical attention and appropriate treatment measures should be sought.
