Is hyperbilirubinemia the same as jaundice?
Disease description:
My skin has been very yellow lately, and after having blood tests at the hospital, I was diagnosed with hyperbilirubinemia. Is hyperbilirubinemia the same as jaundice?
There is a close relationship between hyperbilirubinemia and jaundice, but they are not entirely synonymous. Hyperbilirubinemia refers to a pathological condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood, while jaundice is a phenomenon caused by impaired bilirubin metabolism leading to increased serum bilirubin concentration, resulting in yellow discoloration of the skin, sclera, and other tissues. Specifically, when bilirubin levels exceed the normal range, it can be caused by various factors such as hemolytic diseases, liver diseases, or biliary obstruction. These conditions may all lead to elevated bilirubin levels in the blood, subsequently causing jaundice. In some cases, even with elevated bilirubin levels, jaundice may not manifest, depending on the degree of bilirubin elevation and individual differences. Therefore, hyperbilirubinemia and jaundice are both related and distinct, requiring diagnosis and treatment based on the specific clinical condition.
