What are the risks associated with elevated bilirubin levels?
Disease description:
Today I noticed that my skin turned yellow, and I went to the hospital for a checkup. The results showed elevated bilirubin levels. I'm very concerned and would like to know what the potential risks of high bilirubin levels are?
Elevated bilirubin levels can pose multiple health risks to the human body.
1. High bilirubin levels may lead to hemolytic anemia, as bilirubin binding to lipids in cell membranes accelerates red blood cell destruction.
2. Elevated bilirubin can cause liver dysfunction, such as obstructive jaundice, leading to reduced bilirubin excretion and its accumulation in the bloodstream.
3. Accumulated bilirubin may also cross the blood-brain barrier and enter brain tissue, causing damage to the central nervous system, such as bilirubin encephalopathy.
4. Chronic high bilirubin levels can lead to liver cirrhosis, severely affecting liver function. Additionally, elevated bilirubin increases the risk of kidney dysfunction, such as increased blood levels of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine.
5. Elevated bilirubin may also affect the immune system by inhibiting T-cell activity, weakening immune function, and increasing susceptibility to infections.
