Disease description:

Yesterday I attended a class reunion, and I only then learned the reason why one of my classmates didn't come—he has chronic leukemia. I would like to know, what causes chronic leukemia?

Dr. Liu Feng
The causes of chronic leukemia are complex and may involve the following factors: 1. Biological factors: Viral infections and abnormal immune function are among the main causes. For example, Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) can lead to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. 2. Physical factors: Long-term exposure to ionizing radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays may cause DNA mutations, breaks, and rearrangements, increasing the risk of leukemia. 3. Chemical factors: Prolonged contact with benzene and organic solvents containing benzene is closely associated with the development of leukemia. 4. Genetic factors: Familial leukemia accounts for approximately 0.7% of all leukemias. Genetic mutations, such as chromosome-positive abnormalities, are also linked to chronic leukemia. 5. Other factors: Prolonged overexertion, emotional distress, and similar conditions may also indirectly influence the development of leukemia.
