Dr. Guo Huijie
The main symptoms of mumps include swelling and pain in the parotid glands, typically centered around the ears and spreading forward, backward, and downward. Usually, one side swells first, followed by involvement of the other side. General symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, and loss of appetite are also common. Additionally, mumps may lead to complications including meningitis, orchitis, and oophoritis. Treatment options for mumps are varied and mainly include general care, medication, and surgical treatment. General care requires the patient to rest in bed, maintain good oral hygiene, and consume liquid or semi-liquid foods. Medications such as cephalosporins and amoxicillin may be used to relieve symptoms. For a small number of cases involving acute suppurative mumps or chronic recurrent parotitis that do not respond to conservative treatment, surgical intervention may be considered. It should be noted that mumps is contagious, and patients should be isolated during treatment to prevent transmission to others.
