Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), also known as myeloproliferative disorders, are malignant diseases of the hematopoietic system. They originate from hematopoietic stem cells and are characterized by dysplastic hematopoiesis and a high risk of transformation into acute leukemia. In the bone marrow of patients with MDS, dysplastic changes can be observed in the granulocytic, erythroid, and megakaryocytic lineages, which may be accompanied by an increased proportion of blasts. The main clinical manifestations include anemia, infections, and bleeding, with varying degrees of severity. MDS presents with diverse clinical features, and approximately 80% of patients are over 60 years old. The development of MDS may be associated with genetic mutations, unhealthy lifestyle habits (such as smoking, long-term alcohol consumption, and high-fat diets), as well as prolonged exposure to radiation.
