Can anemia cause foot swelling?
Disease description:
I started experiencing mild anemia after giving birth, so I often feel a bit dizzy in daily life. However, I have recently been experiencing frequent foot swelling. May I ask, can anemia cause foot swelling?
Whether anemia causes foot swelling mainly depends on the severity and underlying cause of the anemia.
1. Mild anemia: Generally, mild anemia does not lead to foot swelling. It may present only with symptoms such as mild dizziness, tinnitus, or pallor.
2. Moderate to severe anemia: As anemia worsens, the number of red blood cells and hemoglobin levels significantly decrease, leading to a marked reduction in oxygen delivery to tissues and organs. This can cause changes in cardiac function and may induce anemic heart disease, which in turn can result in foot swelling. Additionally, conditions such as hypoalbuminemia, cirrhosis, and ascites may coexist with anemia and contribute to lower limb edema.
The occurrence of foot swelling in anemia is related to the severity of anemia and the presence of other concurrent diseases. If related symptoms are present, it is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
