The occurrence of angular cheilitis may result from the combined effects of various factors. 1. Nutritional deficiencies represent a common cause, particularly deficiencies in riboflavin (vitamin B2) and other vitamins. Insufficient levels of these nutrients can lead to damage of the mucous membranes at the corners of the mouth, thereby triggering angular cheilitis. 2. Infectious factors cannot be overlooked either. Infections with pathogenic microorganisms such as Candida, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus species, as well as herpes virus infections, can all lead to the development of angular cheilitis. 3. Allergic factors, mechanical factors (such as misaligned teeth causing folds at the corners of the mouth), and physical factors (such as prolonged maceration of the oral mucosa at the corners of the mouth) may also contribute to angular cheilitis. Therefore, the prevention and treatment of angular cheilitis require comprehensive consideration of these factors, along with the implementation of appropriate measures to reduce the likelihood of its occurrence.
