Angular ulcers, medically referred to as "angular cheilitis" or "cheilosis," are characterized by red patches, cracks, pain, and ulcers on one or both corners of the mouth. Common causes include the following:

1. Nutritional deficiencies: A lack of nutrients such as vitamin B2, vitamin B6, iron, and zinc may reduce the resistance of the oral mucosa, making it more susceptible to ulcers.

2. Poor oral hygiene: Inadequate oral cleaning can lead to accumulation of food debris and bacteria at the corners of the mouth, irritating the oral mucosa and causing inflammation and ulcers.

3. Reduced saliva production: Saliva helps lubricate and protect the oral mucosa. When saliva production decreases, the corners of the mouth become dry and more prone to injury and ulceration.

4. Digestive system issues: Some individuals with oral ulcers may experience gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating, diarrhea, or constipation, which may be associated with the development of ulcers.

5. Hormonal changes: Some women are more prone to oral ulcers around their menstrual periods, primarily due to decreased estrogen levels and increased progesterone levels.
