Is calcification in the liver indicative of cirrhosis?
Disease description:
Today I went to participate in the company's annual full-body examination. The results indicated calcification foci in the liver. Are calcification foci in the liver equivalent to liver cirrhosis?
Hepatic calcification is not equivalent to liver cirrhosis. Calcifications are typically identified during ultrasound or CT scans as small, high-density shadows within the liver and are often associated with prior liver damage, such as chronic inflammatory stimulation, parasitic infections, or intrahepatic bile duct stones. In contrast, liver cirrhosis refers to liver damage caused by various factors, characterized by an uneven, shrunken, or abnormally shaped liver surface, along with impaired liver function and portal hypertension. Therefore, hepatic calcification and liver cirrhosis differ significantly in terms of etiology, pathological features, and diagnostic criteria and should not be confused.
