Symptoms of Facial Paralysis
Disease description:
My maternal uncle has recently developed symptoms of a crooked mouth corner and frequently drools unconsciously; it might be facial paralysis. May I ask, what are the symptoms of facial paralysis?
The main symptoms of facial paralysis include the following aspects:
1. Facial expression muscle dysfunction: The facial muscles on the affected side will become asymmetrically paralyzed, and in severe cases, all facial movements may be lost, such as inability to close the eyelids, drooping of the mouth corner, disappearance of forehead wrinkles, and shallower nasolabial folds.
2. Salivary and lacrimal gland secretion disorders: Facial paralysis may cause reduced secretion from the salivary and lacrimal glands on the affected side, leading to symptoms such as dry mouth and dry eyes.
3. Ocular signs: The two eyes may not align horizontally, with the affected eye typically positioned higher than the unaffected side, and the pupil level correspondingly elevated.
4. Taste disturbances: Some patients may experience impaired taste while eating, especially on the side affected by facial paralysis.
5. Other symptoms: Facial paralysis may also be accompanied by hearing impairment, eyelid twitching, and deviation of the tongue.
These symptoms are related to damage to the facial nerve, and timely medical attention is necessary for diagnosis and treatment.
