Can an HIV infection be detected immediately?
Disease description:
I met a female online friend the day before yesterday, and we later had sexual intercourse. Now I feel somewhat regretful and am afraid that she might have transmitted some disease to me. May I ask if HIV infection can be detected immediately?
After HIV infection, it cannot be immediately detected because there is a window period for HIV testing. The length of the window period depends on the testing method and individual differences. Generally, after HIV infection, the virus replicates in the body and stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies, but this process takes a certain amount of time.
If HIV nucleic acid testing is performed, HIV-RNA can usually be detected in the blood about one week after infection. If HIV antibody testing is conducted, it typically takes around three weeks after infection for antibodies to be detectable, and there remains a possibility of false-negative results. Therefore, it is recommended to have a follow-up test at approximately three months. If using combined HIV antibody and P24 antigen testing, it may be possible to determine infection status about 14 days after exposure.
Therefore, if you have engaged in high-risk behavior, it is advisable to promptly consult a doctor and undergo appropriate testing.
