Can oral lichen planus be cured?
My mouth feels as if it's rotting, with a foul odor. I've been diagnosed with oral lichen planus. I really want to ask the doctor: can oral lichen planus be cured?
Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease that usually cannot be completely cured, but symptoms can be alleviated and disease activity controlled through effective management. This condition is characterized by white, lacy streaks or patches on the oral mucosa, sometimes accompanied by mild pain or discomfort. Treatment options include:
1. Topical therapy: Application of corticosteroid oral ointments or other anti-inflammatory medications to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
2. Phototherapy: Low-energy laser or ultraviolet therapy may help improve symptoms.
3. Psychological support: Since stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms, counseling and relaxation techniques may be beneficial.
4. Lifestyle modifications: Quitting smoking, avoiding alcohol and spicy foods, and maintaining good oral hygiene can help reduce symptom flare-ups.
If symptoms worsen or new changes occur, contact your doctor immediately.
