What medication is used for external hemorrhoids?
Disease description:
I've been experiencing some rectal bleeding and pain around the anus these days. The doctor diagnosed it as external hemorrhoids. I would like to know what medications are effective for treating external hemorrhoids?
For external hemorrhoids, initial treatment is usually non-surgical and includes the following:
1. Topical medication: Over-the-counter topical creams containing hydrocortisone can help relieve pain and inflammation. In addition, suppositories containing anesthetics (such as lidocaine) may alleviate discomfort in the anal area.
2. Sitz bath: Warm water sitz baths (also known as tub baths or anal baths) can help relieve symptoms. Sitting in warm water several times daily for approximately 15 minutes each session can reduce swelling and itching associated with hemorrhoids.
3. Maintaining regular bowel movements: Avoid constipation, as straining during bowel movements may worsen hemorrhoids. Increasing dietary fiber intake and drinking sufficient water can help soften stools.
4. Pain relievers: Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) can help alleviate pain.
If symptoms persist or severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning symptoms occur, prompt medical attention is advised. A doctor may consider sclerotherapy or rubber band ligation.
