The physical examination in surgery focuses on evaluating the anatomical structures and functional status of multiple systems on the body surface and inside the body. This includes, but is not limited to, examination of the skin and subcutaneous tissues to identify abnormalities such as masses, ulcers, and infections; palpation of superficial lymph nodes to assess their size, consistency, and presence of abnormal enlargement; inspection and palpation of the thyroid gland to evaluate its shape, size, and function; as well as detailed examinations of the abdomen, chest, and extremities using techniques such as palpation, percussion, and auscultation to assess organ position, size, consistency, and presence of signs such as tenderness or rebound tenderness, thereby making a preliminary judgment regarding the possible presence of surgically relevant conditions such as inflammation, tumors, or trauma. The surgical examination may also involve assessment of the range of motion and stability of the spine and joints, as well as basic screening of neurological reflexes and sensory function.
