Banlangen contains sucrose; can diabetics take it?
Disease description:
Recently, there has been someone with a cold at home. I have diabetes and would like to drink some Banlangen (Isatis root) for prevention, but it contains sucrose. May I ask, can people with diabetes consume Banlangen containing sucrose?
It depends on the blood glucose control of the diabetic patient.
Isatis root, as a traditional Chinese herb, has functions including clearing heat and detoxifying, cooling the blood, and relieving sore throat. However, sucrose is often added during its preparation to improve taste. For diabetic patients, intake of sucrose needs strict control because it can directly affect blood glucose levels.
When blood glucose control is poor: If a diabetic patient's blood glucose control is unstable or poor, consumption of Isatis root preparations containing sugar should be avoided to prevent further elevation of blood glucose and worsening of the condition.
When blood glucose control is good: If the patient's blood glucose is relatively stable and the physician allows for some sugar intake, small amounts of sugar-containing Isatis root preparations may be consumed, but total intake should be carefully controlled to avoid adverse effects on blood glucose levels.
It is recommended that diabetic patients consult their physician or a professional dietitian before consuming any medication or beverage containing sugar, to ensure safe and appropriate sugar intake.
