What causes excessive eye discharge?
Disease description:
I've recently noticed a sudden increase in eye discharge in the corners of my eyes. I'd like to know what causes excessive eye discharge?
Increased eye discharge is usually caused by the following reasons:
1. Increased eye secretions: Under normal circumstances, the eyes produce tears to lubricate the eyeball, and these tears contain oil and protein components. During sleep, the closed eyelids prevent evaporation of tears, causing these substances to accumulate at the corners of the eyes, forming eye discharge.
2. Conjunctivitis: Bacterial, viral, or allergic reactions may cause inflammation of the conjunctiva, resulting in excessive eye discharge, accompanied by red eyes, itching, or a burning sensation.
3. Sinusitis or upper respiratory tract infection: These conditions may cause blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, preventing tears from draining properly and consequently leading to increased eye discharge.
4. Dry eye syndrome: Although seemingly contradictory, dry eye syndrome can also cause increased eye discharge, as the eyes may overproduce mucus to compensate for dryness.
5. Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelid margins can stimulate the oil glands, leading to excessive production of eye discharge.
6. Inappropriate contact lens use: Ill-fitting contact lenses or poor lens wearing habits may also cause increased eye discharge.
Note that if eye discharge is accompanied by vision loss, eye pain, or other abnormal symptoms, prompt medical attention is advised.
