What is an MCT orthokeratology lens?
Disease description:
I have myopia, and my friend recommended that I use MCT orthokeratology lenses. What are MCT orthokeratology lenses?
MCT, short for "multi-zone refractive optic therapeutic corneal reshaping lens," is a specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lens. These lenses are primarily used for non-surgical correction of myopia to control or slow its progression. The MCT works by applying pressure to reshape the cornea temporarily. Worn overnight and removed during the day, it provides improved unaided vision throughout the day.
The method of using corneal reshaping lenses involves wearing them while sleeping. The lens contacts the cornea and, due to its specific design featuring a central flat zone and surrounding steep zones, flattens the central cornea, thereby improving the refractive state of myopia. Because the cornea has good elasticity, it gradually returns to its original shape once lens wear is discontinued. Therefore, the corrective effect is temporary and requires continuous wear to maintain visual acuity.
It is important that MCT corneal reshaping lenses be used under the guidance of a physician, as they must be custom-fitted to individual ocular characteristics. Regular follow-up examinations are necessary during wear to ensure ocular health and prevent possible complications such as corneal hypoxia and infection. Not everyone is suitable for corneal reshaping lenses; therefore, comprehensive eye examinations and assessments must be conducted before considering their use.
