The Pros and Cons of Orthokeratology Lenses
Disease description:
My eyes are nearsighted, and I have other vision-related issues. Recently, I've been considering orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses. I would like to ask the doctor about the advantages and disadvantages of ortho-k lenses.

Orthokeratology lenses, also known as OK lenses, are specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses primarily used to temporarily reshape the cornea to improve myopia.
Advantages of orthokeratology lenses:
1. Non-surgical vision correction: OK lenses provide a non-surgical method to reduce myopia, making them suitable for adolescents who do not wish to undergo laser surgery.
2. Myopia control: Some studies suggest that orthokeratology lenses may help slow the progression of myopia in adolescents.
3. Convenience for physical activities: For athletes and other active individuals, not wearing glasses can enhance sports performance and comfort.
Disadvantages of orthokeratology lenses:
1. Requires professional customization: OK lenses must be precisely fitted by an eye care professional. The cost is relatively high, and regular follow-up visits and lens replacements are necessary.
3. Temporary effect: After discontinuation of lens wear, the corneal shape will gradually return to its original state, and vision will revert to its pre-correction condition.
4. Potential complications: Long-term use may increase the risk of corneal infections, hypoxia, and corneal edema. Close monitoring of eye health is required.
Note: Prior to considering use, consult with an eye doctor to evaluate your individual ocular health and lifestyle to ensure suitability.
