Can eyesight be restored?
Disease description:
I am 25 years old this year and have always been nearsighted. I would like to know whether my eyesight can be restored.
Vision recovery depends on the cause of vision loss. Below are some common situations and their corresponding recovery possibilities:
1. Myopia (nearsightedness): If myopia is caused by temporary accommodative spasm due to prolonged near work, appropriate rest and eye exercises may help restore vision. However, if myopia has become established, vision usually requires correction with glasses or contact lenses and cannot fully recover naturally.
2. Hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism: Similar to myopia, optical correction such as glasses or contact lenses is typically needed. Some mild cases may improve with age.
3. Eye diseases: Conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration may allow partial or full vision recovery through surgery or medication in some cases, but certain irreversible damages may not be fully recoverable.
Note that once vision changes are noticed, prompt medical attention is advised.
