As a sexually transmitted disease, genital warts are caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) and primarily manifest as wart-like lesions in the genital area. Patients with genital warts should first visit the dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) department. In hospitals with more specialized departments, patients may directly schedule appointments with the STD specialty clinic; in hospitals with less specialized divisions, patients may visit the dermatology department. Doctors in both departments possess professional expertise in diagnosing and treating viral infections, skin lesions, and sexually transmitted diseases. If the genital warts are located in special areas, such as deep inside the urethral meatus, requiring urethroscopy or cystoscopy, referral to urology or andrology may be necessary. Similarly, if the warts are located in the anal canal or rectum, or if there are concurrent anorectal conditions such as severe hemorrhoids, consultation with a proctology department may be needed. For female patients, if the genital warts are located inside the vagina or deeply near the cervix, further treatment may need to be conducted in the gynecology department.
