What causes high prolactin levels?
Disease description:
I am 28 years old. Recently, my menstrual cycle has become very irregular. Sometimes my period doesn't come for a long time, and even when it does, the flow is very light. I went to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor told me that my prolactin level is high. I would like to ask, what causes elevated prolactin levels?
Elevated prolactin levels, medically known as hyperprolactinemia, can be caused by various factors. Common causes include:
1. **Pituitary adenoma**: Approximately half of hyperprolactinemia cases are associated with pituitary microadenomas or macroadenomas. These benign tumors secrete excessive amounts of prolactin.
2. **Hormonal imbalances**: Physiological changes such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, stress, or the use of certain medications may temporarily increase prolactin levels.
3. **Medication effects**: Certain drugs, such as antipsychotics, antihypertensives, or sedatives, can increase prolactin secretion.
4. **Pathological factors**: Hypothyroidism, liver disease, kidney disease, or chronic illnesses may also lead to elevated prolactin levels.
5. **Female reproductive system issues**: Menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or breast stimulation may also cause increased prolactin levels.
Note that if abnormal prolactin levels are detected, consultation with a physician is recommended.
