Elevated prolactin levels in women:

1. Physiological causes: Elevated prolactin levels are common among women of childbearing age. Peaks in prolactin levels can occur within 30 minutes after eating, 60 to 90 minutes after falling asleep, during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy and lactation.

2. Pharmacological causes: Certain medications, such as antipsychotic drugs, cardiovascular medications, estrogen, some gastrointestinal drugs, and contraceptives, may cause elevated prolactin levels. This increase is usually temporary and prolactin levels typically return to normal after discontinuation of the medication.

3. Pathological causes: These mainly include pituitary disorders, such as prolactinoma (a tumor of the pituitary gland), which is the most common cause of hyperprolactinemia. Additionally, hypothalamic disorders such as hypothyroidism, ectopic prolactin elevation, chronic renal insufficiency, and cirrhosis can also lead to increased prolactin levels.

Hyperprolactinemia may cause symptoms such as menstrual irregularities, decreased libido, and breast discharge. In severe cases, it can also affect fertility. Therefore, if these symptoms are present, prompt medical attention is advised.
