Is surgery always necessary for gastric polyps?
Disease description:
I've had severe stomach pain these days, so I went for a checkup and found a polyp in my stomach. I'd like to know, is surgery necessary for a stomach polyp?
Gastric polyps are classified into non-neoplastic and neoplastic types. Non-neoplastic polyps, such as inflammatory or adenomatous polyps, are mostly benign. Small, single polyps usually do not require surgical treatment. However, surgery is recommended for adenomatous polyps larger than 2 cm, multiple polyps, or polyps with irregular appearance and rapid growth within a short period due to their higher risk of malignancy. If gastric polyps cause obvious symptoms such as abdominal pain, indigestion, or bleeding, or if the patient has coexisting severe gastric diseases such as gastric ulcers or gastric cancer, surgical treatment should also be considered. For gastric polyps meeting the indications for endoscopic treatment, endoscopic resection can be selected, including various methods such as high-frequency electrocoagulation, laser ablation, and microwave ablation. These approaches offer minimal invasiveness and definite therapeutic efficacy. Inflammatory gastric polyps caused by Helicobacter pylori infection can be treated with antibiotics to eliminate the underlying cause, and the polyps may regress in some patients as a result.
If gastric polyps are detected or related symptoms exist, prompt medical attention is advised. It is important to improve lifestyle habits, maintain regular作息 (作息 should be translated as作息 habits), and avoid excessive fatigue. Diet should be light and清淡 (清淡 should be translated as清淡), avoiding spicy and irritating foods to reduce gastric mucosal irritation. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided to lower the risk of gastric polyps.
