Causes of Lumbar Disc Herniation
Disease description:
I recently experienced lower back pain and leg soreness, so I went for a checkup and found out I have a lumbar disc herniation. I would like to ask the doctor, what are the causes of lumbar disc herniation?
Lumbar disc herniation is usually caused by multiple factors:
1. With aging, the water content in the lumbar intervertebral discs gradually decreases, making them more susceptible to damage.
2. Chronic pressure or repetitive mechanical stress, such as prolonged sitting or engaging in heavy physical labor, can accelerate disc degeneration.
3. Sudden external forces, such as sprains or improper lifting, may directly cause disc herniation.
In addition to these, genetic factors, obesity, poor sitting posture, muscle weakness, and lack of exercise are also common contributing factors for lumbar disc herniation. Abnormal biomechanics, such as scoliosis, can also increase the risk.
Everyday preventive measures include maintaining good posture, performing regular lower back strengthening exercises, avoiding prolonged static postures, maintaining a healthy weight, and using leg muscles instead of the back when lifting objects. If back discomfort occurs, seek medical attention promptly.
