Sun exposure can worsen melasma. The development of melasma is associated with multiple factors, including hormonal imbalances, the use of irritating skincare products or cosmetics, and facial physical treatments. When skin is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods, ultraviolet (UV) radiation penetrates the epidermis and affects the melanocytes beneath, causing these pigment-producing cells to enlarge and produce increased amounts of melanin. This leads to darkening of the melasma patches. Such changes not only hinder the treatment of melasma but may also accelerate skin aging. Therefore, individuals with melasma are advised to take precautions against sun exposure in their daily lives and reduce UV damage to the skin in order to alleviate symptoms of melasma. If concerns persist, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
