Flat warts primarily develop on exposed areas of the body, especially those regions prone to contact with others or frequently scratched by oneself. Specifically, flat warts commonly occur on the face, arms (especially the back of the hands), forearms, neck, and chest. Occasionally, they may also appear on less common sites such as both breasts, the abdomen, the dorsum of both feet, the thighs, and the scrotum. These areas are more susceptible to infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes flat warts, because they are often exposed and vulnerable to viral transmission through contact or scratching.
Skin lesions caused by flat warts are typically characterized as flat, slightly raised papules ranging in size from a grain of rice to a small pea. They have a smooth surface, a firm texture, and appear as light brown or skin-colored bumps. As flat warts are contagious, early and active treatment is recommended to prevent the spread and worsening of the condition.
