Side Effects of Hyaluronic Acid
Because my skin has some wrinkles, is not very smooth, and feels somewhat rough, I am considering getting hyaluronic acid injections. However, I have heard that there may be side effects, so I would like to ask: what are the side effects of hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is a widely used filler in cosmetic and plastic surgery, primarily for facial filling, wrinkle reduction, and increasing skin hydration. Although generally considered safe, the use of hyaluronic acid may also cause some side effects and risks:
1. Local adverse reactions: Common adverse reactions following hyaluronic acid injections include local redness, darkening of the skin, and mild pain. These usually require no special treatment and generally resolve spontaneously within three days.
2. Bruising at the injection site: Less common adverse reactions include redness, unevenness, and bruising at the injection site. This is caused by damage to small subcutaneous blood vessels during injection and typically disappears on its own within about one week.
3. Granular skin texture: A granular sensation on the skin may occur after hyaluronic acid injection, which generally disappears within a week.
4. Irregularities or lumps: Improper injection may lead to an uneven skin surface or formation of hard lumps. Medical intervention might be required to resolve this issue.
5. Vascular occlusion: In very rare cases, hyaluronic acid may be inadvertently injected into a blood vessel, causing vision impairment, skin necrosis, or cerebrovascular complications. This is a serious complication requiring urgent medical treatment.
6. Long-term issues: Non-biodegradable hyaluronic acid may require multiple injections to maintain the desired effect, and excessive injection may lead to a long-lasting unnatural appearance.
