Disease description:

My baby has recently had some unexplained fever and developed a rash. The doctor said it's infantile emergency rash (roseola). I would like to know, what other symptoms are associated with infantile emergency rash?

Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng
The main symptoms of infantile roseola include a sudden high fever, which lasts for 3 to 5 days and then subsides abruptly, followed by the appearance of a blanching rash. The rash starts on the neck and trunk before spreading to the face and extremities. Most affected children remain generally well and active, aside from the fever and rash. Some children may experience symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, cough, or swelling of the lymph nodes behind the ears and at the back of the head. When children experience fever and discomfort, antipyretic medications may be considered. If symptoms of respiratory infection are present, medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used, but aspirin should be avoided. For children with weakened immune systems, some doctors may prescribe antiviral medications, such as ganciclovir. Most children with infantile roseola recover spontaneously without specific treatment, and the prognosis is good with no long-term complications. Medications should be administered only under the guidance of a qualified physician.
