What is Malignant Mesothelioma?
Disease description:
A friend's father has been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. I have never heard of this tumor before. What is it?
Malignant mesothelioma is a malignant tumor originating from mesothelial cells, primarily occurring in body cavities such as the pleura and peritoneum. It is a relatively rare disease, but it is highly lethal, and its incidence is higher in males than in females. The exact cause of malignant mesothelioma remains undetermined; however, long-term exposure to hazardous substances such as asbestos is considered the main etiological factor. Clinical manifestations of malignant mesothelioma are diverse, including chest pain, dyspnea, and weight loss. The disease progresses rapidly and is often accompanied by metastasis. Currently, chemotherapy is the primary treatment for malignant mesothelioma, but the overall therapeutic efficacy is poor, and the prognosis is generally unfavorable. Therefore, important preventive measures for malignant mesothelioma include avoiding exposure to harmful substances such as asbestos, reducing radiation exposure, and early treatment of chronic diseases, particularly pulmonary conditions.
