What causes low blood pressure with high readings, and is reserpine effective for it?
Disease description:
I often faint due to high hypotension; my doctor prescribed some reserpine for me. May I ask what causes high hypotension, and is taking reserpine effective?

Elevated diastolic blood pressure (isolated diastolic hypertension) may be caused by various factors, mainly including a high-salt diet, lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, insomnia or frequent late nights, cervicogenic hypertension, as well as heart diseases, nervous system diseases, and medication effects. These factors may lead to increased peripheral vascular resistance and elevated vascular tension, thereby causing elevated diastolic blood pressure.
Regarding the treatment effectiveness of reserpine, although reserpine can lower blood pressure, it is associated with numerous and severe side effects such as dizziness, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. It may even trigger more serious health problems; therefore, it is not recommended as the first-choice medication for treating hypertension. First-line antihypertensive drugs more commonly recommended in clinical practice include diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers (ACEI/ARBs), and calcium channel blockers.
Therefore, for the treatment of elevated diastolic blood pressure, it is recommended to select appropriate medications under a doctor's guidance and adopt a comprehensive treatment approach incorporating healthy lifestyle modifications.
