What is an anal fistula?
Disease description:
Due to the presence of an anal fistula, there is always severe anal pain, along with a constant discharge resembling pus. My doctor has recommended surgical treatment. I am quite worried that this might be a serious condition, and I would like to understand what an anal fistula is.

Anal fistula is a complex and common perianal disease, usually resulting from complications after abscess rupture or incision and drainage in the perirectal area. It is characterized by a chronic, infectious channel formed between the anal canal or rectum and the perianal skin. This channel typically consists of three components: an internal opening, a fistulous tract, and an external opening. Patients often experience recurring pus discharge, swelling, pain, itching around the anal area, and even fecal discharge, all of which significantly impair quality of life. Surgical intervention is commonly required to treat anal fistulas, aiming to completely remove infected tissue, close the internal opening, and ensure adequate drainage to prevent recurrence. Postoperative recovery requires maintaining perianal cleanliness, avoiding infection, and promoting wound healing in order to restore normal anal function.
