Melasma generally does not cause a prickling sensation. Melasma is primarily a common skin pigmentation disorder frequently seen on the face. Its symptoms typically manifest as confluent macules appearing as light brown, gray, brown-gray, or brown-black patches, forming blotchy pigmented areas mainly distributed on the cheeks, forehead, and around the mouth. These patches are usually symmetrically distributed in a butterfly pattern. Initially, the color resembles dirt, gradually deepening over time into light grayish-brown or dark brown patches that appear dry, dull, and lusterless. The borders are clear, the surface is smooth, and there is no inflammatory reaction or pain/itching. However, if a prickling sensation occurs in patients with melasma, it may be related to various factors such as excessive estrogen levels, excessive mental stress, or inflammatory irritation. In such cases, timely medical consultation and professional examination are recommended to determine the underlying cause and implement appropriate treatment measures.
