What Are the Causes of Brain Tumors in Children?

The causes of pediatric brain tumors are complex and multifactorial. Genetic factors constitute an important, non-negligible component: certain brain tumors exhibit familial inheritance patterns—for example, retinoblastoma and hemangioblastoma—which may be transmitted to offspring via autosomal dominant inheritance. Embryonic remnants can also give rise to brain tumors; examples include craniopharyngiomas and epidermoid cysts, which originate from embryonic tissue within the brain that fails to regress completely and may subsequently transform into tumors under certain conditions. Furthermore, environmental exposures—including ionizing radiation and toxic or carcinogenic chemicals such as benzopyrene and nitrosamines—are considered potential tumor-inducing agents. In addition, increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation in modern society—such as prolonged use of electronic devices by children—may also contribute to an elevated risk of brain tumors.
