Post-Extraction Care for Wisdom Teeth
I had my wisdom tooth extracted a few days ago, and it's very painful. I'd like to ask the doctor, what are the post-operative care instructions after wisdom tooth removal?
After the extraction of wisdom teeth, following proper post-operative care measures can help accelerate healing and reduce complications. Here are the key points for post-operative care:
1. Hemostasis and Rest: After the procedure, maintain pressure on the wound by biting down on the gauze pad for approximately 15-30 minutes to assist with stopping the bleeding. Avoid strenuous activities and ensure adequate rest after tooth extraction, as vigorous exercise or intense physical activity may increase the risk of bleeding.
2. Dietary Management: Avoid consuming hot, hard, or spicy foods within the first 24 hours after surgery, as these may irritate the wound. Soft or liquid foods such as soup and yogurt can be consumed. Avoid using straws for eating or drinking, as the negative pressure created may cause wound bleeding.
3. Oral Hygiene: Refrain from brushing teeth and rinsing the mouth for the first 24 hours after surgery to prevent the occurrence of dry socket. Gently rinse the mouth with warm salt water to help maintain oral cleanliness and reduce the risk of infection.
If abnormal pain, persistent bleeding, or swelling occurs, contact your dentist promptly.
