Why shouldn't pigeons be eaten during lactation?
Disease description:
I just gave birth not long ago, but the baby's father won't let me eat pigeon meat, saying it will affect breastfeeding. Why is that?
It is not that breastfeeding mothers cannot eat pigeon; on the contrary, moderate consumption of pigeon meat can be beneficial. Pigeon meat is a high-protein, low-fat food rich in essential amino acids, calcium, iron, copper, and other minerals, as well as vitamins A and B-complex. These nutrients positively support postpartum recovery and breast milk production. Additionally, pigeon soup can help promote lactation and improve the quality of breast milk.
Breastfeeding mothers should, however, consume pigeon meat in moderation, as pigeon is considered a warming tonic food. Excessive consumption may cause excessive internal heat ("heatiness"), which can affect the health of both mother and baby. Mothers with a naturally warm constitution, prone to heatiness or excessive sweating, are advised to eat less or avoid pigeon meat altogether. Moreover, when consuming pigeon soup, avoid combining it with other heat-inducing foods such as beef, mutton, longan, or red dates to prevent exacerbating symptoms of heatiness.
