Possible causes of blood-tinged sputum may include: 1. Upper respiratory tract issues: such as nasal or pharyngeal bleeding, oral ulcers, gingival bleeding, or sinusitis. These conditions may lead to blood-contaminated secretions mixing with sputum. 2. Lower respiratory tract diseases: such as bronchiectasis, pneumonia, or tuberculosis. These conditions may cause bleeding due to inflammatory erosion of blood vessel walls or vascular abnormalities. 3. Medication factors: taking certain medications such as aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), or warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding. Patients taking warfarin should have their prothrombin time regularly monitored. In addition, other factors such as dry climate, chronic pharyngitis, and tracheal or bronchial infections may also result in blood-tinged sputum. If this symptom occurs, prompt medical attention is recommended.
