Common symptoms of pruritus (skin itching) are characterized primarily by itching that may be generalized or localized, with no primary skin lesions typically present at the affected sites. The condition is marked by paroxysmal episodes of intense itching, occurring at unpredictable times. It is particularly prone to flare during emotional changes, before sleep, with temperature changes, alcohol consumption, and the ingestion of spicy foods. During episodes, the itching can be nearly unbearable, leading patients to scratch vigorously, sometimes even using tools to scratch until the skin is broken and bleeding, stopping only when pain is felt. Due to repeated scratching, secondary skin damages such as scratch marks, blood crusts, pigmentation, eczematous changes, and lichenification commonly develop. Additionally, pruritus may be accompanied by sensations of pricking, burning, or crawling on the skin, often worsening at night. These symptoms may be caused by various skin disorders or systemic diseases, such as eczema, urticaria, diabetes, and liver or kidney diseases. Prompt medical consultation is necessary to identify the underlying cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
