Can velamentous placenta cause cerebral palsy?
I'm 10 weeks pregnant and went to the hospital for a checkup today. The doctor said I have a velamentous placenta. I've heard that this condition is often associated with cerebral palsy. May I ask if velamentous placenta can cause cerebral palsy?
Velamentous placenta may lead to cerebral palsy, but this is not absolute. Velamentous placenta is a placental形态 with abnormal umbilical cord attachment, where the umbilical cord attaches to the fetal membranes and the blood vessels fan out through the membranes to enter the placenta. This abnormal attachment makes the vessels more susceptible to compression or rupture, which can lead to fetal distress, hypoxia, or even death in the uterus. As a non-progressive brain injury syndrome, one of the main causes of cerebral palsy is hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Therefore, when velamentous placenta causes fetal intrauterine hypoxia, it may increase the risk of cerebral palsy.
Not all fetuses with velamentous placenta will develop cerebral palsy. The occurrence of cerebral palsy is influenced by multiple factors, including but not limited to the severity and duration of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, as well as individual differences among fetuses. Therefore, when velamentous placenta is detected during pregnancy, close monitoring of the fetal condition in utero is necessary, and appropriate treatment measures should be taken to reduce the risk of cerebral palsy and other complications.
