I'm five months pregnant and I'm going to the hospital to check my blood sugar soon. I'm a bit worried. May I ask, what are the normal blood glucose levels before and after meals during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, maintaining normal blood glucose levels is very important for the health of both mother and baby. Fasting blood glucose levels should generally be kept between 3.3 and 5.3 mmol/L (60–100 mg/dL), while blood glucose levels one hour after meals should not exceed 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL), and should return to below 6.7 mmol/L (120 mg/dL) two hours after eating. These values apply to most pregnant women, but specific blood glucose targets may vary depending on individual circumstances and medical advice.

During pregnancy, especially for women with gestational diabetes, more rigorous blood glucose monitoring and management are required. Regular blood glucose testing, following dietary recommendations from healthcare providers, appropriate physical activity, and insulin therapy when necessary are all important measures to control blood glucose levels. If a pregnant woman finds her blood glucose levels outside the normal range, she should consult her doctor promptly.
