Is the fetus awake or asleep when hiccuping?
I'm seven months pregnant, and I've recently been able to hear the fetus hiccupping. I'd like to ask, when the baby hiccups, is it awake or asleep?

Fetuses are usually awake while hiccuping. Fetal hiccups are a normal physiological phenomenon, typically occurring during the second and third trimesters, and represent the fetus exercising its lung respiratory function. These hiccups manifest as regular rhythmic jumps in the pregnant woman's abdomen, similar to a heartbeat, lasting generally less than five minutes and rarely exceeding ten minutes. During hiccups, since the fetus needs to perform swallowing and breathing movements, it is unlikely to be in a deep sleep state. After the hiccups cease, the fetus usually becomes relatively quiet, enters a resting phase, and may subsequently fall asleep again.
However, fetal hiccups differ from fetal movements. Fetal movements are an important indicator for monitoring fetal well-being in utero, whereas fetal hiccups primarily reflect the fetus exercising itself. Pregnant women should regularly monitor changes in fetal movement during pregnancy and seek medical attention promptly if any abnormalities occur. Additionally, pregnant women should maintain a balanced diet and proper rest during pregnancy, avoiding excessive fatigue and strenuous activities to ensure maternal and fetal health.
