Can Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets (Euthyrox) cause leukopenia?
Disease description:
I have a goiter, and my doctor prescribed L-Thyroxine (Euthyrox) for me. I heard that L-Thyroxine may affect white blood cells. Does L-Thyroxine cause a decrease in white blood cells?

Levothyroxine sodium tablets (Euthyrox) do not cause leukopenia. Levothyroxine sodium is primarily used in the treatment of hypothyroidism, acting by replacing the deficient thyroid hormone in the body. Although levothyroxine sodium may exert certain stimulatory effects on the thyroid, it does not directly affect the quantity or activity of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, and therefore does not lead to leukopenia. If a patient is suffering from other conditions such as malnutrition or autoimmune diseases while taking levothyroxine sodium, these factors may influence immune function and consequently affect white blood cell counts. Therefore, regular monitoring of blood parameters is recommended during treatment with levothyroxine sodium to ensure white blood cell levels remain within the normal range. Additionally, patients should also watch for signs such as fever or infection, in order to promptly identify and manage any potential issues.
