Why do dialysis patients often experience diarrhea?
Disease description:
I have been diagnosed with uremia and am currently undergoing dialysis. May I ask why dialysis patients often experience diarrhea?

The causes of frequent diarrhea in dialysis patients can be summarized as follows:
1. Medication factors: Dialysis patients may still be using detoxifying medications. Those containing rhubarb as a primary ingredient can stimulate gastrointestinal motility, leading to diarrhea. In addition, some medications used to lower blood creatinine levels have a certain laxative effect, which may increase bowel movements and, in severe cases, cause diarrhea.
2. Incomplete toxin clearance: Although dialysis can remove some toxins, not all toxins can be completely eliminated. Accumulation of toxins in the body can irritate the intestinal mucosa, triggering a non-infectious inflammatory response, which can lead to intestinal dysfunction and subsequent diarrhea.
3. Dysbiosis: Dialysis patients often experience gastrointestinal dysfunction and gut microbiota imbalance, which may be caused by factors such as reduced gastric acid secretion, slowed intestinal motility, or the use of antibiotics. Once the microbial balance is disrupted, excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine can easily lead to diarrhea.
