What causes blood streaks in vaginal discharge after intercourse?
Disease description:
I had intercourse with my husband the past two days and noticed blood streaks in my vaginal discharge. I would like to know what causes blood-streaked vaginal discharge after intercourse.
It is possible to have blood-tinged vaginal discharge after sexual intercourse for several reasons:
1. Trauma caused by sexual activity: During sexual intercourse, stimulation of the vagina or cervix may lead to rupture of small blood vessels, causing slight bleeding that appears as blood-tinged discharge.
2. Ovulation bleeding: Some women may experience bleeding during ovulation. When the ovary releases an egg, small blood vessels on the surface of the ovary may rupture, causing minor bleeding that mixes with vaginal discharge and appears as blood streaks.
3. Cervicitis or cervical polyps: Chronic cervicitis or cervical polyps may cause cervical congestion and swelling, leading to blood-tinged discharge after sexual intercourse.
4. Endometriosis: Although less common, endometriosis affecting the cervix or vaginal area may also cause postcoital bleeding.
5. Other gynecological conditions: Conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometritis, cervical cancer, or precancerous cervical lesions may also present with such symptoms. Particular attention should be given if the bleeding persists or is accompanied by pain, abnormal discharge, or other symptoms.
If blood-tinged vaginal discharge persists or is accompanied by pain, odor, itching, or dyspareunia, it is advisable to promptly consult a gynecologist for evaluation.
