Is it harmful to have sexual intercourse 10 days after having an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted?
I had an IUD inserted 10 days ago and had sexual intercourse with my husband. Now I'm feeling very anxious, worried about potential effects on my body. Is there any problem with having sex 10 days after IUD insertion?

Inserting an intrauterine device (IUD) refers to placing a birth control device inside the uterus. Under normal circumstances, sexual intercourse might have certain effects within 10 days after IUD insertion.
Placing an IUD is a common method of contraception. However, after insertion, the uterus requires some time to adapt and recover. It is generally recommended to avoid sexual intercourse for two weeks following the procedure. At this time, the cervix has not fully closed, and engaging in sexual activity could increase the risk of infection. Pathogens such as bacteria may enter the uterine cavity through sexual activity, leading to gynecological inflammations such as endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Additionally, having sex too soon may affect the position of the IUD. Since the IUD has not yet fully stabilized within the uterus, early sexual activity might cause displacement or expulsion of the device, thus affecting its contraceptive effectiveness. Moreover, after IUD insertion, the uterus may experience some mild contractions and discomfort; early sexual activity could exacerbate these symptoms, causing sensations such as lower abdominal pressure, back pain, and similar discomforts.
Women are advised to avoid sexual intercourse too soon after IUD insertion. They should also closely monitor their physical condition and maintain good personal genital hygiene to ensure overall health.
