The exact cause of leukoplakia of the vulva is not yet fully understood, but it is associated with multiple factors. Genetic factors are involved, as approximately 30% of cases are attributed to hereditary causes. In addition, long-term chronic inflammatory stimulation is a common cause of leukoplakia of the vulva. For example, vulvovaginal inflammation can lead to hyperplasia, edema, and congestion of the vulvar mucosal epithelium, which may subsequently undergo pigmentary degeneration and develop into leukoplakia of the vulva. Decreased immune function and endocrine disorders may also contribute to the development of this condition. Furthermore, prolonged physical irritation of the vulva, such as moisture and friction, as well as vulvar infections, including fungal infections and trichomoniasis, may also trigger leukoplakia of the vulva. Therefore, the onset of leukoplakia of the vulva results from the combined effects of multiple factors.
