I have had chronic glomerulonephritis for a long time. I recently attended a gathering where beer was served, and I would like to ask: is it okay for someone with nephritis to drink beer? Are there any precautions I should take?

Patients with nephritis are not advised to drink beer. Individuals with nephritis often experience impaired kidney function, and beer contains relatively high levels of water, alcohol, and purines, all of which are detrimental to patients with nephritis. Excessive water intake from beer can worsen edema and may even lead to severe consequences such as pleural effusion, ascites, and heart failure. At the same time, alcohol is toxic to both the kidneys and liver, damaging their function and affecting drug metabolism and excretion, thereby exacerbating the condition. In addition, beer also contains a high level of purines, which are metabolized into uric acid, increasing the burden on the kidneys and causing further damage.
