What causes drooling?
Disease description:
My baby is one and a half years old. Recently, he has been drooling frequently, and the family is quite concerned. I would like to ask what causes excessive drooling?
Drooling, medically referred to as excessive salivation, may be caused by the following factors:
1. **Conditioned reflex**: When seeing acidic or appetizing foods, the body may produce a reflex that stimulates the salivary glands to secrete more saliva, leading to drooling.
2. **Emotional tension or anxiety**: In stressful or anxious situations, the body may produce a stress response, resulting in increased salivary secretion and drooling.
3. **Inflammation**: Inflammatory conditions of oral tissues such as gingivitis, periodontitis, glossitis, and pharyngitis may stimulate excessive secretion from the salivary glands, leading to drooling.
4. **Tooth loss**: Tooth loss can impair chewing function, prompting the mouth to produce more saliva to assist in digestion.
5. **Excessive gastric acid secretion**: Conditions such as gastritis and reflux esophagitis can cause excessive gastric acid secretion, which in turn stimulates the salivary glands, causing drooling.
6. **Neurological diseases**: Disorders of the central nervous system or endocrine dysfunction may lead to abnormal secretion from the salivary glands, resulting in drooling.
