What tests are included in kidney function examinations?
Disease description:
I was recently diagnosed with suboptimal kidney function and will be going to the hospital for a follow-up examination in a couple of days. I would like to ask what are the main tests involved in assessing kidney function?
Renal Function Tests:
1. Serum Creatinine (Cr): Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle metabolism and is normally excreted from the body through the kidneys. Elevated levels of creatinine in the blood may indicate a decline in the kidney's filtration capacity.
2. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Urea nitrogen is a waste product of protein metabolism, similarly excreted by the kidneys. Increased BUN levels may suggest impaired kidney function.
3. Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR): Estimated based on the serum creatinine level, eGFR directly reflects the kidneys' ability to filter waste products and is an important indicator for assessing kidney function.
4. Uric Acid: Uric acid is a product of purine metabolism in the body, and elevated levels may be associated with gout or abnormal kidney function.
5. Urinalysis: Includes urine protein, urine specific gravity, and microscopic examination of urinary sediment, which can reveal clues to diseases such as urinary tract infections and nephritis.
6. Blood Electrolytes: Such as sodium, potassium, chloride, etc. The kidneys regulate the body's electrolyte balance, and abnormalities may reflect impaired kidney function.
