Differences between vitiligo and pityriasis versicolor:
1. Etiology: Vitiligo is mainly caused by the destruction of melanocytes, possibly related to factors such as ultraviolet radiation and genetic predisposition; pityriasis versicolor, on the other hand, is a fungal infection caused by Malassezia infection of the stratum corneum of the skin.
2. Clinical manifestations: Vitiligo presents as round or oval depigmented patches on the skin, appearing milky white or porcelain white, with clear borders and smooth surfaces. Pityriasis versicolor presents as small, punctate macules centered around hair follicles, which may vary in color (e.g., brownish, pale red, etc.), with a surface covered by fine, flaky, dandruff-like scales.
3. Common sites of involvement: Vitiligo can occur on any part of the body, but commonly affects exposed areas such as the face, hands, and feet. Pityriasis versicolor typically occurs in areas rich in sebaceous glands, such as the armpits, neck, chest, and back.
4. Treatment: The treatment for vitiligo primarily involves medication therapy, including calcium supplementation, copper supplementation, and blood circulation-promoting and stasis-resolving therapies. Pityriasis versicolor is mainly treated with antifungal medications.
